Today, 15 October, is the International Day of Rural Women.

It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 in its resolution 62/136. In it its recognizes the invaluable contribution of women to rural development. They are farmers, stockbreeders, veterinarians, entrepreneurs, educators… and with their work they help economic growth in the most remote and vulnerable environments in the world.

Rural women represent more than a third of the world’s population and 43 percent of the agricultural workforce. However, structural barriers and discriminatory social norms continue to limit the power of rural women in political participation within their communities. Moreover, in many cases their work is invisible and unpaid and, on the other hand, rural women are in worse conditions than rural men and urban women.

From Magapor we join in this well-deserved tribute to these women. Our most sincere admiration.

Thus, in its manifesto, the United Nations asks for them:

  • Creating an enabling environment to improve their situation, eradicating discrimination against them in law and in practice, and ensuring policies that respond to their needs and priorities; in particular for indigenous women and women with disabilities.
  • Measures for the political and socio-economic empowerment of rural women and full and equal participation in decision-making at all levels.
